Reading CNN....

Today is a lovely day, and I’m stuck inside…hooey blah.

I noticed that the Turkish Ambassador is being yanked from these parts and sent back to Istanbul, (I still call it Constantinople). All over the bill recognizing the Armenian genocide, bought damn time if you ask me. I’m sure, they are getting their noses in a snit, and yes, I know all the military/political reasons why it wasn’t so smart an idea. Now, if we could only hold ourselves accountable for the atrocities we’ve committed….damn, I suppose we can’t recall an ambassador to ourselves if we are in a snit.

Harold Bloom, the noted literary critic, is a jackass. It has to be said, and I think it has been said in many quarters, but honestly, why do people still give this man’s opinion any credence, and then, why do they still pay him for it. I’ve not seen a book this man has liked in years, and in particular he hates the science fiction and fantasy genres. He seems to be a fellow who studied literature in college and hated the fact he was forced to read it, so decided to piss on everyone’s parade for the fun of it. Perhaps he’s a frustrated writer, and because he couldn’t think of a good story line.

I would LOVE to see what Bloom made of Nanowrimo. God, he’d probably loose some of the hairs out of his upward thrust nose. It might mean that there is less protection if it rains, and he might drown. But then, would anyone weep? I don’t think I would notice, but CNN would stop quoting him. Git.

I am curious as to why they are digging up The Gipper. As if Notre Dame’s season isn’t sucking bad enough, (maybe they should just play my Bruins every week and have a winning season), now they are digging up one of their biggest icons? And no one is sure why. I wonder, what sort of family tiff could there POSSIBLY be to dig up a man whose been dead now 80+ years. At least when they dug up Jesse James while I was in college at William Jewell, it was to settle whether the fellow buried in Kearney, MO was really the true outlaw or not. Turns out he was, and this seemed to make people at the History Channel very happy.

I just found it disturbing they had his “re-funeral” at Gano Chapel at the Jewell campus. I mean…well you couldn’t help but be a bit curious about it and want to check it out. I peeked my nose in on it, but felt it was odd that one of the claims to fame my college had was that one of its founders was Jesse’s daddy, and thus he got to have a funeral here over 100 years after he died.

Why didn’t they have the funeral there 100 years ago?

It would have been cool though if he’d been buried in the cemetery on campus. Imagine playing laser tag around that thing. I bet it would be a great way to get some girl to have a little nooky time with you, “Hey baby, you want to go check out Jesse’s grave?”

Don’t think I didn’t have friends that would do that….

bloom will die soon, no need to worry. i find him and his mean spirited, antiquarian ideas rather intolerable. yes, he will die, and his aesthtic approach to literary criticism will die with him.

my mom just got her visa to turkey, and both she and my dad will be there at the end of this month. maybe not such a good idea? as long as they dont make their americannness obvious?

True....

Best of luck to your folks.

Bloom is such a jackass, honestly, he wouldn't know literature from the Sears catalogue. I wonder if he lives in his own critical little bubble?
It is my understanding that the entire reason the Armenian Genocide is even an issue, is that the bureaucratic class in turkey see themselves as a continuation of the Ottoman Turks, Who actually committed the genocide. So it's only an issue at the political level.

Also, did anyone from America stop going to Greece after the US government recognised the "Republic of Macedonia". If it wasn't for Cyprus, Turkey would probably be an EU state by now.
Why did Constantinople get the works?
That's nobody's business but the Turks.

Even old New York was once New Amsterdam.
Why they changed it I can't say,
People just liked it better that way.

Hah! You steals my stooolen lyrics!

I sing in your general direction.

Re: Hah! You steals my stooolen lyrics!

She left it wide open for that song to be brought up.

Re: Hah! You steals my stooolen lyrics!

Why, yes, indeed! Obviously this is a

Case of Like Minds Working In Great Circles.

But how much cooler...

Would it be if it were New Amsterdam....maybe we'd get to keep the pot and the hookers.
Istanbul was Constantinople
Now it's Istanbul, not Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Why did Constantinople get the works
That's nobody's business but the Turks
